Recent Volcanic Unrest in the Rotorua/Taupo Region
Recent Volcanic Unrest in the Rotorua/Taupo Region
Lecture by Brad Scott, Volcanologist
Friends of Rotorua Museum are pleased to host a lecture by volcanologist Brad Scott on Sunday 11 June 2023 from 3pm.
The talk will mark the 137th Anniversary of the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. This special talk will take place at the historic Buried Village (Tarawera Road) where Scott will discuss the recent volcanic activity specific to Rotorua/Taupo and his career with GNS Science, Te Pū Ao, New Zealand’s leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research.
Scott is a Volcanic Information Specialist with over 48 years’ experience in monitoring and assessing active volcanoes, geothermal systems and earthquake activity. He stared work with the NZ Geological Survey (DSIR) in Rotorua before moving to DSIR Geology and Geophysics, and has been with GNS Science since 1991.
He has been involved in a wide range of geological and geophysical investigations related to active volcanoes, geothermal systems and earthquakes, mostly involving monitoring, hazard assessment and rapid event response. From 1992 to 2012 he took the lead role in coordination of volcano surveillance in New Zealand and now focuses on risk analysis and communications of this information as part of the GeoNet project.
Tickets are $10 for members of Friends of Rotorua Museum and $20 for non-members.
Tickets are now available to purchase from Rotorua Lakes Council Reception (1061 Haupapa St, Rotorua). Numbers are limited for this popular talk so get in quick.
Light refreshments (Devonshire tea) will be provided from 3pm with the talk beginning at 3.30pm.
